What is a Papal Blessing?

The Apostolic Blessing or papal blessing is a blessing imparted by the Pope, either directly or by delegation through others. As of January 1, 2015, the Holy See adjusted the method by which Papal Blessings on parchment are distributed. All requests must now be submitted directly to the Office of Papal Charities via letter or fax. Proceeds from the distribution of parchments will be given toward the poor in the name of the Holy Father.

To learn about what information is required, circumstances for which blessings are granted, and the suggested donation, CLICK HERE. Please note the following:

  • 13 to 25 Euro equals between $13.99 to $26.99 (for parchment)
  • 10 to 16 Euro equals between $10.76 to $17.22 (for postage)
  • 18 to 30 Euro equals between $19.37 to $32.28 (for DHL express courier)

For example, using the basic postage rates, the suggested donation would be between $25 to $45, or between $33 to $60 if using DHL express courier.

Official Request Form for Elemosineria Apostolica - Office of Papal Charities

To download the request form, CLICK HERE.  Please note: There are three circumstances or events which require a nihil obstat (a certification that a book is not objectionable on doctrinal or moral grounds) or approval of ecclesiastical authority. They are:

  • Marriage Anniversaries for 10th, 25th, 40th, 50th and 60th years of marriage only. Anniversaries other than those listed will not be accepted.
  • Birthdays for 18, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100. All other birthdays will not be accepted.
  • Catholic individuals or families. In the case of families, the name and surname of the spouses united in a religious marriage must be provided.

How to get an Approval of Ecclesiastical Authority

Here in the Diocese of Honolulu, ecclesiastical authority comes from either Bishop Larry Silva or Msgr. Gary Secor as the Vicar General. Consequently, if you plan on requesting a papal blessing for any of the three circumstances listed above the process would unfold like this:

  1. Go to https://www.pnac.org/visitorsoffice/papalblessings/  The Pontifical North American College/Papal Blessing Requests
  2. Go directly to the Request Form. It is form fill-able.
  3. Fill in ALL the blanks and print it.
  4. Send the form along with a letter from the pastor attesting to the good standing of the person(s) receiving the blessing to the Office of the Vicar General, 1184 Bishop Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813.
  5. Once approved, the form will be faxed by the Vicar General’s office to the Elemosineria Apostolica.
  6. Within two to three months, the papal blessing will be mailed to the address indicated on the form.
  7. Make payment AFTER the blessing has been received by bank transfer or by online credit card payment via their website http://donatio.catholica.va/donatio/DONELE/start.page

This improved process is more streamlined and eliminates the need for the diocese to coordinate the exchange of documents and payment. Questions can be directed to Elina Simon, Executive Assistant to the Vicar General at (808) 585-3346 or esimon@rcchawaii.org.
