On December 8, 2024, St. George Catholic Church in Waimanalo marked a significant milestone in its 70th anniversary celebrations with the installation and blessing of a new shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The event, which coincided with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, brought together the parish community in a joyous celebration of faith and culture.
A Gift of Devotion
The Mexican members of the congregation, led by Luisa Gallardo, and Jesus and Nancy Gallardo, generously donated a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe and built the shrine. This act of devotion reflects the diverse and vibrant community that makes up St. George Parish. The shrine has been officially named “Ermita de la Virgen de Guadalupe” or “Hermitage of the Virgin of Guadalupe,” emphasizing its significance and cultural roots.
Celebration of Faith
Father Raymund Ellorin, pastor of St. George, assisted by Deacon Ricardo Burgos, celebrated the Holy Mass in Spanish, honoring the cultural heritage of the donors. The choice of December 8th for the installation was particularly fitting, as it aligns with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a day of great significance in the Catholic faith.
Community Festivities
Following the installation and blessing of the new “Ermita de la Virgen de Guadalupe,” parishioners and guests gathered for a festive celebration. The event featured a spread of authentic home-cooked Mexican dishes, showcasing the rich culinary traditions of the community. Entertainment added to the joyful atmosphere, bringing together people of all backgrounds in celebration.
Part of a Larger Celebration
This event is one of many taking place throughout the year to commemorate the 70th anniversary of St. George Catholic Church. The parish, known for its beautiful grounds and strong community spirit, has been a cornerstone of faith in Waimanalo since its establishment.
As St. George Parish continues its year-long anniversary festivities, the new “Ermita de la Virgen de Guadalupe” stands as a testament to the church’s inclusive spirit and the deep faith of its parishioners. It serves as a beautiful addition to the church’s existing gardens and sacred spaces, further enriching the spiritual landscape of this beloved Waimanalo parish.
