From the Office for Social Ministry
Published in May 2017, Pope Francis released his encyclical, Laudato Si, subtitled, “Care for Our Common Home.” Our Holy Father focuses on care for the natural environment and all people, as well as broader questions of the relationship between God, humans, and the Earth. In it, he says, “Our relationship with the environment can never be isolated from our relationship with others and with God.”
Pope Francis’ message seeks to create an integral ecology in which all that is sacred is considered and cherished. Human beings too are creatures of the world and so widespread environmental degradation doesn’t just hurt natural resources, it hurts human life as well. We are meant to be among and for creation as it’s caretaker, not above it as it’s Lord. The earth is a gift – a gift for all to be cared for by all.
In their work across the globe, CRS helps communities most vulnerable to climate change to be resilient help themselves. One way they are doing this is by introducing new farming techniques for raising crops able to withstand severe weather conditions. Communities are taught to protect their crops from flooding and other skills and techniques. But we must work together to stop global warming to protect our planet and global family.
