From the Office for Social Ministry
“Let us remember the past with gratitude, live the present with enthusiasm, and look forward to the future with confidence.” Pope John Paul II
We have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, especially for those dedicated to parish social ministry this past year. Responding to people in need during a pandemic has not been an easy task. Yet our volunteers and church staff have shown tremendous compassion, strength and fortitude, even during these trying times.
For instance, food pantries of all sizes have witnessed an unprecedented rise in feeding those in need; but were still able to provide regular distributions, while maintaining the safety, health and welfare of others. The pandemic also revealed just how much we rely on kupuna volunteers to keep social ministries up and running. MAHALO to all our senior citizens who have continued to serve in various capacities amidst their own personal challenges.
Understanding vulnerable populations and how best to respond with the compassion and love of Christ takes an entire faith community to come together. We are truly blessed to have so many collaborating to reduce the impacts of food insecurity and lack of affordable housing in Hawaii.
Many churches are also dedicated to hosting vaccination sites, conducting friendly calls, and visiting those who are forced to shelter in place. Others are reaching out to homeless persons and migrant workers, as well as those returning from prison, and so much more.
Your friends at the Office for Social Ministry are filled with thankfulness and gratitude to all our hardworking, enthusiastic volunteers. We are confident in your ability to meet future challenges with grace, empathy, and kindness. May God bless all of you and keep you safe this Holiday Season.
Happy, Happy Thanksgiving!
