Now that hurricane season has begun, it is a good time to stock up for essential supplies if you haven’t done so already. Hawaii’s season of tropical cyclones lasts from June through the end of November. So, it’s important to be prepared with the necessary items to make it through a natural disaster.
Last year, our islands were spared from the impacts of Hurricane Douglas, which came dangerously close to the state in July 2020. Although pandemic shutdowns had already forced residents to stock up in preparation for supply shortages, many were still unprepared, particularly persons with disabilities.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reminds us that “it takes one direct hit, or even a close call, to have a major impact on daily life here in the Hawaiian Islands.” It’s important that we get the word out to our vulnerable neighbors the importance of emergency and disaster preparedness so to keep healthy and safe.
The Americans with Disabilities National Network has prepared various checklists and resource sheets to include:
The Pacific ADA Center region encompasses Arizona, California, Nevada and Hawaii. Their mission is to build a partnership between the disability community and the general public. Visit their website at https://www.adapacific.org/mission
