Hawaii’s public schools have announced they will extend the free Grab and Go meals program through June 30, 2021. The meals are part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture effort to provide nutritious food to all students age 18 and under. Distributions are held Monday through Friday except holidays and school breaks. Both lunch and breakfast for the following day will be provided at 203 public schools statewide. The YMCA of Honolulu (Oahu) is providing free grab and go healthy lunch meals for children in need. Sack lunches are distributed Monday through Friday at the following locations and times:
Another helpful organization is the Hawaii Children’s Action Network, which provides a COVID-19 resource site with various links to access food for families, keiki and kupuna on every island.
It is important to note that many of the food initiatives established across the state since March has been federally funded by the CARES Act that is scheduled to sunset December 31, 2020. Unless funds are re-allocated by Congress, our parish food ministries will most certainly feel a greater impact throughout our communities. Be sure to share information for accessing these food resources to those whom we are called to serve - our vulnerable sisters and brothers, young and old.
