After a thoughtful and thorough candidate search, Superintendent Dr. Mike Rockers has announced that Dr. Llewellyn Young, Principal of St. Joseph School Hilo, will be the incoming Associate Superintendent of Hawaii Catholic Schools. He will succeed Betsey Gunderson who will retire on June, 30, 2019.
Dr. Rockers has shared, “I am so happy that Dr. Llewellyn has accepted the associate superintendent’s position. He is well-respected and has excellent relationship-building skills. He is a person of Faith and has a devotion to the Catholic Church. His administrative experience and background in Catholic schools will serve him well; as will his love for and understanding of Hawaii. His experience in strategic planning, curriculum development and implementing needed changes will be an asset to the Hawaii Catholic Schools.”
Although she will be missed terribly, Betsey is looking forward to her well deserved retirement. Betsey has served numerous roles at St. Anthony Jr.-Sr. High School in Wailuku, Maui, Maryknoll School and Sacred Hearts Academy. Aside from being Associate Superintendent, she's filled the roles of teacher, principal, vice principal, director, department chair, division coordinator and Head of School. On behalf of the Hawaii Catholic Schools office, Dr. Rockers said it best, “Betsey deserves our deep appreciation for all her good work, not only as Associate Superintendent, but for all her many years of service to those affiliated with our Catholic schools.”
