Catholic devotion to the saints is our way of showing respect and admiration for the memory of those men and women who chose to surrender their will, and sometimes their lives, to serve God and his Church.
Saints are ordinary people, some married, some remained single, and some entered religious life. They are imperfect people who, because of their faith, persevered, where others gave up, and endured much more for the sake of Christ.
Here in Hawaii, we are twice blessed with the canonization of Saint Damien in 2009 and the canonization of Saint Marianne Cope on October 21, 2012. Bishop Larry Silva tells us that the canonization of Hawaii's second saint, "will provide the spiritual strength to follow in their footsteps".
