Join the November Movement to End Hunger & Homelessness!

November 9, 2020

From the Office for Social Ministry

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week, when advocates across the country volunteer, donate or educate people about the challenges facing people in poverty. You, too, can get involved in the fight to end to these social problems!

For example, the National Coalition for the Homeless, along with local community agencies and other faith-based organizations are continually working to end and prevent homelessness while ensuring the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness are met and their civil rights are respected and protected.  Feel free to reach out to your parish community about ways to share your time, talent or treasure to the cause.

We applaud all our dedicated parish volunteers who work hard throughout the year in helping people to help themselves, by providing assistance and outreach care to our houseless brothers and sisters—including veterans, formerly incarcerated men and women, persons struggling with addiction, and the working poor.  We also thank our parish partners: Catholic Charities Hawaii, the Institute for Human Services, Alea Bridge, Family Promise Hawaii, HOPE Services Hawaii on the big island, Kauai Economic Opportunity and Maui Economic Opportunity, to name a few.

Hunger and homelessness often go hand-in-hand.  Those in need of shelter are usually in need of proper nutrition. Fortunately, our food pantries across the state provide a safety net for those struggling with food insecurity. Supported by many of our parish social ministries, these Food pantries are able to offer regular distribution schedules as follows:

National research shows that a high percentage of people coming out of prison rely on shelters both immediately following their release, as well as for the long-term.  Before they can address health problems, find a job or learn new skills, those re-entering society need a place to sleep and eat. For those transitioning back to community, a comprehensive list of community resources can be found on the Hawaii State Department of Public Safety website. For other COVID-19 resources, please visit the Office for Social Ministry website. Let’s work together to end hunger and homelessness this November!
