Hawaii Seminarians Host Luau Dinner

October 20, 2019

On Sunday, October 20, 2019, the Diocese of Honolulu seminarians, along with seminarians from the Diocese of Suwon, South Korea and seminarians from the Archdiocese of Agana, Guam, hosted a Hawaiian Luau Dinner for Sean & Peggy O'Malley and 20 of their guests. Sean and Peggy O'Malley are long time benefactors of St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, CA, and most of all supporters for vocations to the priesthood. Last year, at the Seminary Gala, Sean and Peggy won a silent auction for a Hawaiian Luau Dinner.

The dinner started with a social with spam musubi, lumpia, edamame and poke; with beer and wine. Then Deacon Dario Rinaldi offered a prayer in English and Hawaiian, then Deacon Dario chanted a Hawaiian oli as the guests processed to the dining room for dinner. Each guest was greeted with a fresh lei, which was donated by the Tui Family (family of seminarian Ace Tui). The guests enjoyed a delicious dinner of kalua pork, chicken long rice, bbq chicken, rice, green salad and hawaiian sweet roll. Dessert was tropical fruits and haupia. Seminarian Ace Tui was the head chef who planned the menu, with other seminarians assisting him at the kitchen. Seminarian Kurt Meyer, Larry Denis and Preston Castro offered games of learning Hawaiian and Pidgin words for our guests. At the end of the dinner, each guest was given a kukui nut lei, and a box of Hawaiian macadamia chocolate as a gift, which were donated by Fr. Vincent Vu and Fr. Romple Emwalu.

Sean and Peggy offered their gratitude and appreciation for the seminarians who helped put the dinner together. They were amazed, and didn't expect a dinner to be extravagant. They also assured all of us of their support and prayers for seminarians.

Attached is a picture of Sean and Peggy O'Malley and a group photo of all who attended the dinner.

Besides those mentioned above, the other Hawaii seminarians at St. Patrick’s Seminary are Kevin Clark, Arrion Rosales-Llantos, and Hai (Francis) Pham.
