Years ago, an indult was granted by the Holy See to the Diocese of Honolulu to reduce the number of Holy Days of Obligation to two: the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8, the Patroness of the USA); and Christmas (December 25). After a discussion of the Diocese of Honolulu's Presbyteral Council in the Fall of 2016, it was decided to leave the current practice in place, but to encourage the faithful to attend Mass on the other Holy Days of Obligation celebrated in the United States of America. Pastors are therefore asked to provide practical opportunities for more people to attend Mass on these days by celebrating a Vigil Mass (when permitted) or extra Masses at hours convenient for the faithful.
