USCCB Sacramental Catechesis Resources

Continue to pray and learn with your community of faith using these resources from the United States Conference for Catholic Bishops.

Evangelization is Essential

Pre- and evangelization of families is an ongoing responsibility of the entire parish community.  Remember that Jesus first invited and cultivated friendships with his disciples before he began to teach (catechize) them.  I have witnessed your evangelization efforts when you:

  • Greet every parent by name.
  • Strive for them to encounter Jesus’ love and care through your warmth and hospitality.
  • Listen to their stories with an open heart.
  • Offer to pray with and for them.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION

First Reconciliation during Advent

With your pastor, consider preparing children to make their first confession in the season of Advent.  Advent is a wonderful time to experience the reconciling love and healing grace our Lord offers.

Religious Education Handbook

This is a great opportunity to update your general RE handbook.  A comprehensive template for the parish Faith Formation program. (Mahalo to advisers Sr. Mercedita Estrella, SPC and Julia Torres)

Sacrament Preparation Handbook

Using this template, create a handbook specifically for parents of children who are preparing for Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The template includes references to the new Norms for the Sacraments of Initiation and videos on the sacraments. (Thanks again, Sr. Mercy and Julia!)

Sample Letter to Parents

Parent involvement is essential!  This sample introductory letter can help get you started.

Parish/School Communication

Catholic schools are encouraged to provide the catechesis for Confirmation to their students.  Thus, parish/school coordination is essential.  The last two pages of the Instruction for Transition (PDF) contain sample letters of communication between the Catholic school and parish.

Lesson Pacing Plans

Every major publishing company is aware of our transition to Original Order.  A recommended procedure:

  1. Create a pacing chart template noting the # of weeks RE classes are held.
  2. Note all special solemnities, feast days, and other annual occasions/activities celebrated at your parish.
  3. Determine the date that children are to receive the sacraments.
  4. Determine the dates for parent faith formation and informational meetings.
  5. Determine the date(s) for family retreats.

Share this chart with your consultant and work with her/him to create lesson pacing plans for grades kindergarten - 5 for your RE year.  If needed for the parish's comprehensive youth ministry program, also include grades 6 - 8 and 9 - 12.

Sacrament Preparation Retreat for Families

Get parents involved in preparing their child for Reconciliation, Confirmation, Eucharist through hands-on learning. Invite parents of children who have already completed their Sacraments of Initiation to be facilitators!

PRAY: OFFER, STRENGTHEN, SUSTAIN

God is calling us to a new understanding of the Sacraments of Initiation.  We are offered new life in Baptism, strengthened in Confirmation, and sustained and nourished in Eucharist.  May we allow God to renew us through our work and receive with joy the grace given freely to us in the Sacraments.
